B, The Hundred is a sailboat built by two captain mermaids, from April to July 2021. Our building process was guided by a strong will to initiate a more inclusive practice to twist this convention.
The construction of B, the Hundred was driven by two main concepts B that boats embody: the tension between shifting and hosting individuals, and their Interdependence with water.
The construction and use of sailboats are historically male- dominated and come with a long and ongoing sexist tradition. For centuries, women were believed to carry bad luck onboard. Yet, having a feminine figurehead on the bow was not an issue. Even today, women still have difficulty finding a place onboard.
Since the building chapter ended, the ship has hosted several feminist and LGBTQIA+ led workshops and events (concerts, food design, flag making, tattoo sessions, performances, talks...) It became a platform for people to gather and experiment. It is now part of the Verbeke Foundation collection. During the summer of 2022, the boat traveled through the Netherlands for three weeks.
